Mill feed lines carry abrasive slurry from the mill discharge to classification equipment. Like cyclone feeds, they operate under high pressure with tight bends and extreme flow – making them one of the most failure prone areas in any plant.

Rubber or steel piping wears rapidly and can force unplanned shutdowns. Beaver Process partners with mining operators to design tailored mill feed systems that last longer and are easier to maintain.

Common Cyclone Feed Issues

Abrasion

The highest wear occurs in the bends and at the pump discharge where high velocity slurry strikes the outer wall. In cyclone feed lines this turbulent zone erodes liners. The same occurs in mill feed piping. Unchecked, these hotspots quickly thin the liner, leading to leaks or catastrophic failure.

Misalignment

Plant settlement, vibration and installation tolerances can cause mill feed pipework to shift. Rigid steel spools can’t absorb this movement, creating stress points and frequent failures. Flexible hose sections, such as Slurryflex, absorb misalignment and speed up shutdown fit ups.

Vibration

High energy slurry flow and pumping action generate vibration that stresses rigid piping. Over time, this vibration loosens joints, accelerates wear and contributes to costly unplanned downtime. Flexible hose acts as a vibration dampener, protecting adjoining pipework and pumps.

Velocity Errors

Incorrect pipe sizing or sharp bends create velocity hotspots where slurry impinges on the pipe wall. These “velocity errors” shorten wear life and force repeated repairs.

Re engineering pipe routing and upgrading the lining material reduces turbulence and extends service life.

How Beaver solves the mill feed line problem

Beaver Process designs mill feed systems that last longer and perform better than standard pipework. Our approach combines smarter design with advanced materials.

1. Optimise Flow Geometry

Avoid tight elbows and sharp directional changes that cause slurry impact and rapid liner erosion. Replace 90-degree bends with long sweeping curves to slow velocity changes and minimise turbulence. Using long radius bends or flexible hose bends significantly reduces slurry strike and extends component life.

2. Use Flexible Ceramic Lined Hose in High Wear Zones

In areas exposed to severe abrasion such as pump discharges and cyclone feeds, specify Slurryflex CLX ceramic lined hose. Its flexible rubber body absorbs impact and vibration, while the embedded alumina tiles provide exceptional wear resistance. At the Ma’aden Barrick copper mine, standard hoses failed after three months; Slurryflex CLX lasted more than twice as long, cutting maintenance frequency and shutdown risk.

3. Install Polyurethane Lined Steel Spools for Straights

For fixed pipeline sections, Abrasiguard polyurethane lined steel spools combine high structural strength with outstanding abrasion resistance. These linings routinely outlast rubber lined or HDPE pipe by up to ten times, reducing replacement costs and improving uptime. Pairing long radius Abrasiguard bends with Slurryflex hose sections delivers a balanced system for both rigidity and flexibility.

4. Engineer the System for Reliability

Reliability starts with smarter components and accurate data. Fit appropriate reducers and high performance valves to smooth flow transitions and cut turbulence. Flexible reducers at pump outlets absorb vibration and prevent dead leg wear. Finally, use a SlurryIQ audit to map velocity errors, wear hotspots, and mis sized pipes. Optimised layouts ensure consistent flow, fewer failures, and piping that lasts through planned shutdown intervals.
Stronger, smarter mill feed systems reduce wear, vibration and installation time – keeping your plant online longer.
